Melatonin and Sleep

Sleep is a vital part of human life, as it provides the body with the time and energy it needs to function properly. Melatonin, a hormone naturally produced by the body, plays a crucial role in regulating our sleep-wake cycle.

Melatonin is often referred to as the “sleep hormone” because it signals the body to prepare for sleep. It is produced by the pineal gland in the brain and released in response to darkness. The release of melatonin helps to reduce alertness and promote feelings of drowsiness, making it easier for us to fall asleep and stay asleep. As melatonin levels drop in the early morning, it helps us to wake up and start the day afresh.

However, the production of melatonin can be disrupted by various factors, including exposure to artificial light from electronic devices such as smartphones and televisions. This can lead to decreased levels of melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Melatonin supplementation can be a way to improve sleep quality by helping to regulate our sleep/wake cycle. Melatonin supplements are available over-the-counter and are often used as a sleep aid for individuals who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Melatonin supplements are also commonly used for individuals who have jet lag, shift work sleep disorder, or delayed sleep phase syndrome. I'd recommend talking to your doctor if you'd like to trial melatonin supplements to make sure it's the right option for you.

You can naturally promote your intrinsic melatonin levels by avoiding blue light before bed, and getting some sun first thing in the morning.

Ultimately, the best thing you can do for your sleep is to continue to have a consistent bedtime routine focusing on good sleep hygiene. Have a read of our other articles to learn more!
